Starter Villain by John Scalzi (2023)
Story: 7 of 10 Stars
Starter Villain by John Scalzi is a fun, light read that hits just the right notes for when you need something entertaining without too much effort. The story follows Charlie, a 28 year old guy who unexpectedly inherits a supervillain empire, and it’s filled with quirky humor, absurd moments, and just enough action to keep things moving. Scalzi’s writing style is sharp and fast paced, making it the perfect book to throw on while you're working through other tasks or projects.
What I really enjoyed about the book was how often it made me do a double take. Just when you think things are going one way, Scalzi throws in an offhand, absurd line or situation that catches you completely off guard. It’s those moments that really made the book stand out. It’s got that perfect mix of humor and surprise that keeps you smiling.
It’s not the most serious or deep book, but that’s part of its charm. Starter Villain is a fun, easygoing read that doesn’t take itself too seriously and knows exactly what it’s doing. Overall, I’d give it a 7 out of 10. It’s a solid pick for anyone looking for something light, funny, and a bit out there.
