Wicked (2024)
Rating: 5 of 10 Stars
Wicked has long been a staple in the world of Broadway, and the 2024 movie adaptation certainly delivers on the spectacle and magic we've all been waiting for. From the opening notes of Stephen Schwartz's iconic score to the sweeping visual effects that bring Oz to life, the film truly feels like a love letter to the beloved musical. But does it manage to live up to its source material? The short answer is: mostly.
The performances are nothing short of extraordinary. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo shine as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, each bringing their own unique charm and depth to the roles. Grande's powerful vocals blend seamlessly with Erivo's ethereal presence, creating a dynamic duo that captures the heart and soul of the story. Their chemistry is palpable, making their friendship, and eventual rift, all the more compelling.
Visually, the film is a feast for the eyes. The world of Oz is rich with color, from the emerald city to the fantastical creatures that inhabit it. Director Jon M. Chu knows how to deliver on the grandeur of the musical numbers, and scenes like "Defying Gravity" are nothing short of breathtaking. The choreography, too, feels fresh yet faithful, with dance numbers that impress without overshadowing the emotional core of the story.
However, Wicked is not without its flaws. At times, the pacing feels uneven, with certain plot points dragging a bit before the action picks back up. The film is also quite long, and though the lush production values are stunning, a tighter edit might have kept the energy flowing more smoothly. Some may also find that the adaptation doesn't fully capture the humor and wit that made the stage production so engaging, leaving certain moments feeling flat.
The changes made for the film adaptation are mostly for the better, but there are a few narrative tweaks that could leave longtime fans questioning the decisions. While these adjustments help streamline the story for a new audience, they do stray from the original in ways that could be polarizing for purists.
Overall, Wicked (2024) is an exhilarating, emotionally charged experience that fans of the stage show will certainly appreciate, while newcomers to the story may find themselves enchanted by the spectacle. While it's not perfect, it's certainly a magical ride that's worth taking - and it's clear the filmmakers put their heart into bringing this tale to the big screen.
